Christmas Greetings from Jingoistic Intolerant Xenophobes Anonymous Of West Texas.
It seems as if the year 2015 has flown by at a record pace.  And of course I normally air my gripes and voice my opinions on the people in charge of our federal government with little or no respect shown them.  And, the reason for that is simple.....  THEY  DO  NOT  DESERVE  OUR  RESPECT  NOR  DO  THE  MAJORITY  OF  THEM  DESERVE  TO BE NEITHER  RE-ELECTED NOR  RE-APPOINTED.
But during this time of year I have a tendency to look back and reflect on just how fortunate I have been and am at present to have been  exposed to some really quality friends and acquaintances throughout  my 78 years on this earth.
I am very thankful that I was born here in America (in 1937)  to loving parents and a very close knit family on both my Mom and my Dad's  side.  I am also thankful that my really formative years were spent in Houston, Texas in the early 1940s where we lived until my wife,  my daughter and I moved to Hobbs, New Mexico in  1973.
Growing up in Houston during the 40s and 50s were the absolute best years to have made some lasting friendships.  So many of my schoolmates have been very successful in their chosen fields.  Of course many of them have passed away and it seems that I lose a greater number each passing year.
Our 30 years spent in Hobbs, New Mexico (1973 - 2003)  were also some great times to be living in that area of the country.  And of course,  Hobbs, New Mexico was where I ended my 45 year law enforcement career.  Each year we are able to go back to Hobbs where I can visit with some of the best friends I have.  But over the past 12 years I have lost many of our New Mexico friends.  But  this is something which we all must deal with in our lives.
I have also been very fortunate to meet and make some lasting friendships in San Angelo, Texas where we moved from New Mexico in 2003.
But I guess  the thing for which I am most thankful is my family. My wife and I only have one daughter BUT we have FIVE   GRANDCHILDREN  AND  FOUR  GREAT  GRANDCHILDREN  with another on the way.
Each year at Christmas for many years my wife wrote an annual Christmas Letter which we mailed out to family and friends.  She does not work on the computer anymore and so the Christmas Letter came to a halt.  However, we still receive Christmas Letters from our old and some of our new friends and we both thoroughly enjoy reading  them.
I know that I am very critical of our elected officials and many of their actions BUT I feel as if  these people need to be held accountable  just  as  I and my co-workers in law enforcement were held accountable for our actions.  It seems as if many of our elected officials and public officials in today's world believe that their underlings should be held accountable BUT  the same rules do not apply to themselves.
I am so very sorry that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will never experience the total enjoyment of growing up in a courteous society.

Anyway,  I want to wish ALL  OF  YOU AND  YOUR  FAMILIES A VERY  MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR .  And I sincerely hope that 2016 will  bring some hope back to our country.

Earlier today, I attended the funeral of a Catholic Priest whom I had met about 5 years ago.  His name is Rev. Romanus Arinze Akamike.   If  this name sounds African it is because it is.  Fr. Romanus was born in Nigeria in 1954.  He passed away here in Texas on December 12, 2015.
I first met this kind man as I said about 5 years ago when he was assigned to St. Charles Catholic Church in Eden, Texas which is about 42 miles South of San Angelo.  And if you have never driven from San Angelo to Eden or vice versa, it is the LONGEST 42 miles in Texas.  I believe it was in either 2009 or 2010 when we found out that Fr. Romanus was planning on making a trip to his home country of Nigeria and was attempting to locate  computers and other electronics to take back with him for the schools in his home in Ibeme, Imo State, Nigeria.  At that time, we had purchased a new computer and I had two older ones along with a couple of older printers and two screens and some other electronics that we had replaced.  So we called and one Saturday Fr. Romanus and another African Priest came to our house.

It didn't take me long to realize that both of these men spoke more proper English than I.  Almost immediately, they noticed in a couple of my bookshelves that I had a large number of books on African History (not African-American history, nor black history but African Continent History).  They were both amazed that someone with my background would have any knowledge or interest in the history of the African Continent.  But I had become interested in African History  a good many years ago but most of the History I had read dealt with South Africa;  Rhodesia (Zimbabwe);  Kenya;  Tanganyika (Tanzania); Uganda;  Congo and some of the other nations in which the Nile River ran through.
Of course they were most appreciative of the computer and electronic equipment we were donating to their schools.  We had a really nice visit.  I ran into Fr. Romanus several times after that at various places in San Angelo and he always remembered me and always thanked me for our generosity.  I always told him that I wish we could have done more.  He was a small man with a huge smile.

Then today at his funeral I learned that he had received his Masters Degree in Counseling and Psychology from Angelo State University and earned a PhD in Psychology from Capella University in Minnesota.  In the Eulogy given by Rev. Francis Onyekonzuru who was from Fr. Romanus' village in Nigeria.  He said that his father and Fr. Romanus were best friends growing up.  He told a few stories about Fr. Romanus life and one in particular was when the Nigerian Army was sweeping through villages and  snatching up  military age males regardless of their desire to be drafted or not and they snatched up Fr. Romanus.  Then they noticed that the forefinger on his right hand had been cut off near the middle joint.   This meant that his trigger finger was missing so they passed him by.  This young Reverend was quite emotional when talking about Fr. Romanus and remained so throughout the service.

A couple of traditional African songs were sung by a Nigerian musical group and the music was quite pretty and easy to listen to.  Anyway, I believe we lost a good man.
Beginning last Thursday, the Texas State High School Football Championships were played in Houston, Texas AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM  WAS  TELEVISED  BY FOX SPORTS SOUTHWEST.  Needless to say, I watched every single Championship game and stuck with them until... "the last dog was hung".  A few of them were a bit one sided but my favorite game was the Class 2A  Division II, which is the smallest division of the 11 man football classes.  In this game the Bremond Tigers won their second Texas State Championship in a row by defeating Albany 35 -20.  It just so happens that I married a girl from Bremond, Texas and we still have some relatives and friends who live in that area.  Their coach is a local man who played for Bremond when he was in school.  I worked with his brother on the Houston Police Department years ago. AND, their All State Quarterback will be back next year.
Probably the strongest and most talented team I saw was the Richmond George Ranch Longhorns who beat Mansfield Lake Ridge 56 - 0.  George Ranch was loaded on both sides of the ball and it didn't matter which of their 5 or so running backs was playing, they were all very good.  One, however, was way good.  He ended the night with 247 yards rushing and scored 3 touchdowns.   Richmond George Ranch is Southwest of Houston.
BUT with the Texas High School Football Championships done.... I am sort of taking the Rhett Butler attitude on the remainder of the college and pro seasons.  And, of course, that would be.... "FRANKLY MY DEAR,  I  DON'T  GIVE  A  DAMN".
OH  NO MR.  BILL!!!   Senator Lindsey Graham announced a couple of days back that he is "SUSPENDING" his presidential campaign.  "Suspending his campaign".  I'm not completely sure but I believe that this is synonymous with taking whatever money is left and heading South.  And what is so surprising is that John McCain had endorsed Senator Lindsey Graham.  Hmmmm.  Wonder why it is that BOTH  McCain and Graham are high on my VARMINT  LIST.  Now, if Jeb Bush will only SUSPEND his campaign along with John Kasich and Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina will take their money and run, perhaps the remainder can have an opportunity to answer some decent question and we can choose a candidate.
I am pretty sure that most of you have notice a single fact about our elected officials.  A couple of years back, the Republican Party took back control of both the Senate and the House with promises made to us that they were going to stand up to Obama and make some much needed changes.
I was just thinking that perhaps it might be a good idea to begin to KEEP  THEIR  PROMISES.  Right now... and I heard someone on the radio this morning make  the statement that the present Republicans were nothing more than "DEMOCRATS  LIGHT".  Perhaps a few less calories but it looks and tastes the same.   If they cannot keep their word............. dump 'em.
I am also confident that many of you are wrapping your KWANZAA gifts to send me.  I have already received 2, II,  TWO, DOS,  KWANZAA  CARDS.  I am positive that this highly respected Holiday holds its proper place on your Totem-Pole of Importance...... It sure holds the proper place in mine..... somewhere between a root canal and a colonoscopy.
