When I first met Billy, he was having surgery for some serious skin cancer on his nose. He explained to me and other friends what the doctors had planned. They cut away at least half of his nose and after many trips to Dallas over several years he finally showed up one day with a prosthetic nose. The new nose attached to his face to metal clips which had been screwed into the vacated area. The first morning he showed up with his new nose, we were all taken back a step or two as you absolutely could not tell that his nose was false. The skin tone, the skin surface and everything about the prosthetic nose was absolutely perfect and you could not tell that it was not his natural nose. It was really an amazing piece of surgery.... and one which I had never seen before.
And instead of being very guarded about the fake nose, Billy made jokes about it and would occasionally turn his head and remove it just to see the look on some stranger's face. And throughout the entire time I knew this man, he kept a wonderful sense of humor. But what really made me respect Billy Williams was how he had been raised. He was one of 11 children and while still in school had to literally take over the farm duties due to the illness of his father. Then after his father passed away, Billy really did become "the man of the house". Billy farmed and raised livestock and ran feed lots all his life and when he was in his 50s he took on a job as a pumper in the West Texas oilfields and continued to do this until a few weeks prior to his death.
Billy and his wife helped raise several of their grandchildren and I have often heard him say, "The best gift you can give someone is the ability to take care of themselves." And even though Billy was 2 years younger than me, he reminded me of my own father and grandpa who had that same outlook. Billy really did enjoy helping others and when he was out in the oilfield checking his wells, he would keep a sharp eye out for antler sheds and the like as my wife likes to put them in her cactus gardens. At his funeral, many people spoke on how much he had helped out neighbors and other family members through the years.
Billy was the last of his siblings to pass on but one of his grandsons gave a very moving eulogy for his grandpa. And this grandson is very successful and said that he owed it all to the things he had learned from Billy Williams, his grandpa.
After his death, the thought crossed my mind that two of the absolutely nicest men I have ever known were also two of the toughest people I had ever known. One of them was my old neighbor in Hobbs, N.M., Bob McKelvey who had been a POW in a Japanese Prison in World War II and the other was my late friend Billy Williams. The world will never be quite as interesting without these two men.
Well, Ted Cruz won Texas in his bid and also Oklahoma and overall did pretty well BUT "The Donald" came out ahead in the "Super Tuesday" Republican Primary elections.
Unfortunately, I am of the opinion that the Republican Party is well on its way to being taken over by the same type of self centered, liberal, Establishment Republicans who have pretty much killed the Republican Party that I joined in Ronald Reagan's first Presidential Campaign. I had been a member of the Democrat Party from the first time I registered to vote in 1958. Then in Reagan's first year as the Republican Presidential Candidate it dawned upon me that I had voted for: Richard Nixon in 1960; Barry Goldwater in 1964; Richard Nixon in 1968; Richard Nixon in 1972; Gerald Ford in 1976..... and not a single one of them was a Democrat. So I switched party affiliations in 1980. AND, my record is still intact that from the first time I was eligible to vote in 1958, I had NEVER voted for a Democrat President.
AND, even thought I have precious little use for Donald Trump, if he is the nominee against either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, I will be forced to suspend gagging long enough to VOTE AGAINST EITHER HILLARY OR BERNIE. I feel pretty sure that the Republican Party which I joined in 1980 is.... if not dead.... is at least in intensive care and not expected to live long.
Also, in this year's election season, I have lost all respect for ALL OF THE TELEVISION NETWORKS.... and YES, I am including FOX News. I have grown way past weary of watching Karl Rove break out his chalk board and show us just how things are, because we are all just too stupid to understand the spoken word.
In my humble opinion, Karl Rove; Sean Hannity; Juan Williams; Geraldo Rivera; Megyn Kelly; RNC Chairman Reince Priebus; Donald Trump; Marco Rubio; John Kasich; the entire CNN and MSNBC news departments could ALL use a swift kick in the ass. You will notice that I left Bill O'Reilly out of this as on occasion he will actually stumble upon the truth while telling us all just how really smart he is and how we should all be purchasing one of his books.
I am really afraid that "The Donald" is going to get the Republican nomination. AND, if he does, you had better hold onto your seats as the entire News Media, including FOX News, will suddenly discover all the crap they have been holding back since "The Donald" first announced his Presidential intentions, and he will look like that bear in the old coin operated shooting game and will steadily be growling and standing up on his two hind legs. If you think that "The Donald" can withstand some serious media scrutiny then you are in need of some serious counseling.
As I said earlier, the Republican Party that I joined in 1980 has, as we say in Texas, HEADED SOUTH.

"The SUPER TUESDAY primaries may be a turning point for America ---- and quite possibly a turn for the worse. After seven long years of domestic disasters and increasing international dangers, the next President of the United States will need extraordinary wisdom, maturity, depth of knowledge and personal character to rescue America...... Instead, if the polls are an indication, what we mat get is someone with the opposite of all these things, a glib egomaniac with a checkered record in business and no track record at all in government --- Donald Trump.... If so, the downward trajectory of America over the past seven years may well continue on into the future.".... THOMAS SOWELL

Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us.... If any of you have purchased a firearm of any type in the past 15 or so years, you know that you must fill out an ATF Form, I believe it is #4473 on which you must have proof of identity and you must answer a series of questions regarding your background, such as criminal convictions... etc. After the Brady Bill was passed another added item was passed and added onto this Form #4473. Of course prior to this item was passed into law by our esteemed House and Senate. Prior to that, a Felony Conviction prohibited a person from purchasing a firearm from a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer.
BUT, this item was added on as an Amendment to some type of funding bill, as I was told, AND this little piece of legislation also added a question regarding a MISDEMEANOR Conviction for not only a Domestic Violence crime but any crime which contained the elements of a Domestic Violence crime. Now I am sure that most in law enforcement or those with a law degree or some legal training could tell you is, that Domestic Violence is not necessarily some type of violence committed against a spouse or a family member. I do not know for sure but in many states it includes ANYONE sharing a residence or ANYONE with whom a close association exists OR even a FORMER FAMILY MEMBER. And, most of these crimes are classified as a MISDEMEANOR CRIME.
I read a couple of days back where Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is questioning whether or not a MISDEMEANOR Conviction should be used to suspend a Constitutional Right to own a firearm. According to my understanding of this law, if one has been convicted of Domestic Violence, it is a crime to PURCHASE; OWN; or POSSESS any firearm.
Most Law Enforcement Officer whom I have known back when this law was passed were in a state of shock that the Federal Government would pass a law PROHIBITING the Purchase or Possession or Ownership of a firearm due to a Misdemeanor Conviction. AND, Justice Thomas asked an attorney appearing before the Supreme Court if she could name any other area where a Misdemeanor Conviction suspended a Constitutional Right. Evidently she could not.
I read an article in the (Sub) Standard Times where the Mayor of Ithaca, New York wanted his city to host the nation's FIRST SUPERVISED INJECTION FACILITY, enabling heroin users to shoot illegal drugs into their bodies under the care of a nurse without getting arrested by the police. He said that too many heroin addicts were dying. OK, now let me see if I have this right...... It is ILLEGAL to POSSESS HEROIN in the United States. SO, the Ithaca Mayor wants a safe place where heroin addicts can inject themselves with a drug WHICH THE MERE POSSESSION OF IS ILLEGAL. Perhaps this is an area that either Hillary or "The Donald" can address after she/he/it is elected President.
Another sad death was the passing of George Kennedy, a tough guy character actor who achieved star status in the 1967 classic, "Cool Hand Luke". I also remember Mr. Kennedy playing the lead role as "Bumper Morgan" in the television series "The Blue Knight" which was based upon Joseph Wambaugh's best selling novel, The Blue Knight. When I first read the book, I told old friends that if this was made into a movie that George Kennedy would be perfect for the part. They did actually make a movie which had William Holden in the lead role and it was good BUT George Kennedy WAS BUMPER MORGAN. I have seen him in countless movies and he was really good in every single role he played. I have also seen him interviewed several times and he was a class act. Mr. Kennedy was 91 when he died. Lost another good one.
